It will be “Up, Up and Away” as the 4th annual Great Chesapeake Balloon Festival takes off on Friday, July 31 and Saturday, August 1. President of the Talbot County Paramedic Foundation, Wayne Dyott said that this year’s benefit with over 15 hot air balloons, skydiver’s, static displays, rock climbing wall, food and giveaway’s will be complemented by a host of other events. The event is highlighted by “Peanut the elephant”. “Peanut” is a 100 foot high, elephant hot air balloon with a 49 foot trunk. This specialty balloon is sponsored by Pascal Restaurant Group (St. Michael’s Harbour Inn and Marina, Bistro St. Michael’s and Mason’s Restaurant and Catering).
AQUA Pools and Spas and Tri- Gas & Oil are sponsoring the festival at Mistletoe Drive, off Glebe Road at Aqua location and behind in the industrial Park.
Excitement heats up on Thursday evening at 5:00 PM at the Balloon Burner Bake –off Cooking Contest on Harrison Street at the Beautiful Tidewater Inn. The public is invited to watch Five Easton area restaurant Chefs present their special dishes using the 15 million BT U hot air burner. Competition is keen and hot as a panel of distinguished judges determines the winning delicacy.
Friday evening balloonists will gather at Mistletoe Drive site to prepare for the launch under the direction of Balloonmiester, Ron Broderick. He is a renowned balloonmiester, most recently responsible for the highly successful Preakness Balloon event. Skydivers from Baltimore Skydive will jump prior to the ascension of the magnificent balloons.
The breathtakingly beautiful Aqua Pool Glow will begin a half hour past sundown. Eight to Ten colorful hot air balloons will glow into the night to orchestrated music.
Two hot air balloons will be tethered to the ground offering rides ($20 for adults and $10 for children under 12) up to 60 feet in the air. Another balloon will be inflated on the ground for children and adults to venture into its center ($2).
The AQUA Pool Glow party, a fund raiser sponsored by Aqua Pools and Spas and Kelly Distributors, is a festive affair featuring home cooked barbecue, Craft beers, music, VIP parking and viewing. Fast forward to 6 am Saturday morning for the inspirational presentation of colors. Balloons are inflated immediately as they will take off into a mass ascension.
At 7:30 AM Saturday Morning comes a Cow drop with 100 miniature cows parachuting from the sky with a free sandwich coupon courtesy of Chick-fil-A, sponsored by Nagel Farm Service.
The Maryland National Guard continues with its Mammoth display and offers an opportunity to stop by and learn more about their important contribution to our state and nation.
During both days activities attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets. There is no admission fee. Paramedic board members and personnel will appreciate a $5 car load parking fee.
Limited numbers of boarding passes to ride in a hot air balloon are available at $225 a person. Those who wish to ride should make reservations with balloonmiester, Rod Broderick 410-442-5566.
Each balloon is sponsored by a local business and their representative will be riding high in the sky for the thrill of the lifetime.
The Great Chesapeake Balloon Festival is a wonderful community event and it is the Talbot Paramedics Foundation major fund raiser, according to Wayne Dyott. Last year’s event raised $20,000 and was used to purchase video intubation equipment for paramedic units. Over the last 25+ years, the Foundation has provided over $250,000 in life-saving equipment and personnel training thanks to the generosity of the supporters.
